WHILST WATCHING THE 'WORLD AT WAR'

television poppies 1915-1975

I watched the world at war today

saw muddy streams and dull grey tears

black blood and desperation mixed

with black and frightened fears.

I saw a man without a face

he spoke without a voice

and begged me then, to leave that place,

whilst  I still had a choice.

I watched a horse this morning

flicker on a screen

I closed my eyes to glance through tears

to where the horse had been.

I watched it pull a mighty gun

whilst following he man,

but my eyes tears could not quite see

where muddy water ran.

the place , he said "is different now"

he painted "trees and grass"

in silent mist the man then wept

as through my sight they past..

now I recall them watching me

inside my  tortured mind

they willed me then to join them

yesterday

and walk behind.

I don't suppose I'll ever know

amongst those frightened men

who was the man who glanced at me

sixty years from then.HOME PAGE
